Illinois U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says Democrats will have to make changes to a health care overhaul if they want to pass the bill.

Durbin says he may be willing to reconsider a plan that would give people the option of choosing government-run insurance.

Instead, they would be covered by a non-profit healthcare cooperative.

DURBIN: We are working with Republicans in the Senate to come up with a bill that at least some members in the Republican Party can support. And we’re going to have to make concessions for that to happen. Things that I don’t want to give up, I may have to give up.

Durbin says he’s also willing to negotiate how much of the one-trillion dollar overhaul would be funded by cost-cutting, and how much by tax increases.

But Durbin did not mention putting a cap on medical malpractice suits, a proposal Republicans have been pushing.
