Illinois U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says leaders in his chamber are close to producing major healthcare legislation.

The $1 trillion healthcare overhaul has been caught up in the Senate Finance Committee as lawmakers wrestle with how to increase coverage while cutting costs.

But Durbin said Monday afternoon that the committee was trying to produce a bill by the end of the day.

DURBIN: They’ve been working to make it bipartisan. It’s tough. But imagine, if you will, this is the biggest undertaking in Washington in 70 years.  We’ve never tackled a topic this big.

House and Senate leaders are rushing to draft health care proposals before Congress adjourns for its August recess.

Once a bill moves out of the Finance Committee, it still would have to be voted on by the full Senate.
