The Chicago City Council is expected to vote on a plan on Wednesday that extends the teen curfew by half an hour. But some teens say that’s unfair.

Fifteen-year-old Ty’Rees Cole says he’s received a citation for breaking Chicago’s teen curfew. He says the curfew’s a real drag during the summer.

COLE: You want to go to parties or whatever. And you know, parties may not be at a certain time. And then you got to leave the party— stop your fun—just because of curfew.

According to the Chicago Police Department, nearly 26,000 citations were issued last year. And police spokeswoman Monique Bond says a majority of citations were handed out on the city’s south and west sides. She says that’s because more crime takes place in those areas.

BOND: While it may feel restrictive to teenagers and youth, in the end we may have been able to save a life.

The new curfew would begin at 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends.
