Pullman on Chicago’s far South Side is one of the better known planned communities in the United States. In the late 19th century, George Pullman built an entire small town all in support of industry - his rail car company. He wasn’t the only one. Head a few miles east out of Pullman to East Chicago, Indiana. You’ll find the lesser-known community of Marktown. The Chicago Architecture Foundation is offering a tour this Saturday. Edward Torrez will lead it —he’s a principal with the architectural firm Bauer-Latoza. He gives Richard Steele for a primer on the history - and the coming revitalization – of Marktown. He says Marktown was developed at a moment when the American home was undergoing a re-do.
