Six illegal immigrants including three in Chicago have volunteered for deportation as part of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pilot program.

Earlier this month, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement rolled out the plan. It’s aimed at thousands of illegal immigrants who have ignored court orders to leave the country. Gail Montenegro is with the agency. She says the pilot program is a better deportation option because it gives immigrants 90 days to plan their departure without fearing a sudden arrest.

MONTENEGRO: They have showed failure to comply with the law. So it is a very sudden arrest and detention. And those were the concerns that had been raised to us by community groups and attorneys in the past. So we are exploring this alternative.

She says it’s too early to tell if the program is successful. Grazyna Zajaczkowska of the Polish American Association doesn’t think the plan makes sense. She says it’s unlikely many people will volunteer for deportation.
