The Chicago Department of Public Health says enforcing the foie gras ban isn’t practical.

The city ordinance is designed to keep restaurants from serving the delicacy made of the liver of fattened geese or ducks.

It went into effect on Tuesday.

Tim Hadac is a spokesperson for the department and says it hasn’t handed out any citations.

“In a world of finite public health resources and yet very, very daunting daily public health challenges be it cancer or HIV or heart disease or any of the number of things we are dealing with every day, as you might imagine this is relatively low on our list of priorities,” Hadac says.

Hadac says the department isn’t actively looking for restaurants that serve foie gras, but it will investigate if citizens file a complaint.

He says he doesn’t anticipate many calls.
