Illinois politicians continue to share their memories of former President Gerald Ford, who died Tuesday at the age of 93.

Abner Mikva represented Illinois’ 10th Congressional District while Ford was a congressman.

Mikva says he has many personal memories of the former president, but the best way to describe his legacy came from one of Ford’s political opponents.

“I think the best epitaph that could be given for him is that during the height of the debate between him and President Carter when they were running against each other in ‘76, Jimmy Carter turned to him and said, ‘President Ford, you’re a good and decent man and the country’s grateful for all you’ve done.’ And I think that was true,” Mikva says.

Mikva says Ford was well-liked by both parties in Congress and tried to use those relationships to get the country back on track after Nixon’s resignation.

He also says Ford’s athletic abilities weren’t lost on the golf course.

Mikva says Ford would always beat him, usually shooting in the mid-80s.
