Gary, Indiana, Makes Pitch For Amazon

There’s been a lot of speculation about Chicago’s efforts to land the second Amazon headquarters, but Gary, Indiana, is also making a pitch. Gary Mayor Karen Freeman Wilson says it doesn’t matter if the city doesn’t have everything Bezos is looking for — like a million plus residents and a thriving public transit system. What the struggling steel town does have, Freeman-Wilson says, is available land, access to Lake Michigan and its close to Chicago. Cities all across the U.S. are pitching themselves to Amazon.

Chicago’s tipped minimum wage increased on July 1 after the City Council passed an ordinance last fall to increase the tipped minimum wage annually for five years until it reaches parity with the city’s standard minimum wage.
Some small business owners said they plan to close during the two-day event, but others are excited about the race and the boost in pedestrian traffic that could bring more sales.
Starting Monday, the tipped minimum wage is increasing from $9.48 per hour to $11.02. Wages for tipped workers will rise annually until 2028, to reach parity with the city’s standard minimum wage.
