A pioneering African-American politician is being honored this weekend in Northwest Indiana. Fifty years ago Richard Hatcher won election as mayor of Gary, Indiana. And, in doing so, became the first African-American to be elected mayor of a large American city. The historic win will be celebrated by many who see the 84-year-old Hatcher as a civil rights leader. The Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr. and Minister Louis Farrakhan are scheduled to attend. Saturday’s event will also be a fundraiser to establish a National Civil Rights Hall of Fame in Gary.
