When Regina Agyare Honu was growing up in Ghana, she had dreams of being a “rocket scientist.” When she presented a high school science project to her teacher, she was told, “It’s impossible. Girls don’t build rockets. You will end up in the kitchen.”
So she founded Soronko Solutions, a software development company and social enterprise startup.
Based in Accra, Ghana, Soronko and its nonprofit arm, teach African youth how to code and use technology to solve social issues. Honu wants to change what she believes are most people’s first impressions of Africa “as a place of hunger, poverty, disease and war.” She will receive Northwestern University’s 2017 Buffet Institute for Global Studies Emerging Global Leaders Award.
