Worldview continues its “Global Activism in India” series with a visit to the mountains of Udaipur, India. Manish Jain grew up in Willowbrook, IL. He attended Brown and Harvard Universities, and the, he says, he felt compelled to give back to his ancestral India. But his experiences in conventional education and at multilateral institutions like UNESCO left Jain feeling like there had to be a better, alternative approach to educating, mentoring and training youth. So he and a group of friends moved back to India and founded Swaraj University. The school includes an urban youth center and a biodiverse ashram. Jain and Swaraj co-founder Reva Dandage, also a former Chicagoan, tell us how a university that doesn’t grant diplomas has changed their lives and the lives of young people in India.
