This fall Chicagoans will have to start paying back federal student loans after a three-year pause. Are you feeling the squeeze?

Borrowers have been off the hook from making payments since early 2020, soon after the pandemic began. Advocates say that has allowed many to start families and purchase first homes, or to cover the rising costs of housing, food and other basic needs.

Illinois residents owe $61.6 billion in student debt, according to the Education Data Initiative. That amounts to more than $37,000 per borrower. More than 1.5 million borrowers in Illinois were banking on debt relief through President Joe Biden’s federal student loan cancellation program. But it was overturned by the Supreme Court last month.
