Lea Minalga is all too familiar with the effects heroin and other drugs are having in Chicago’s suburbs. She says her son was among the first wave of teens to use heroin in St. Charles in the mid-’90s. These days – after battling addiction for nearly 15 years – her son is clean. But Minalga continues to serve families struggling with heroin addiction. She’s the founder of Hearts of Hope, a non-profit drug education and support center in St. Charles. She’s also a licensed drug counselor, and she serves on the parents’ advisory board of the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. Lea Minalga talks about how heroin is currently impacting families in her area.
