Last winter, we reported on the assassination of Honduran human rights attorney Dionisio Diaz Garcia. Dionisio was known as “the lawyer of the poor” for his work on defending labor rights.

At the time of his death, he was investigating the labor practices of the private security firms Delta and SETECH – firms that the Honduran government purportedly hires.

Mr. Garcia and the organization he worked for, the Association for a More Just Society, received threatening e-mails and text messages about the work Dionisio was doing.

Then on December 4th, 2006, Dionisio was shot to death on his way to the Supreme Court by two men on a motorcycle. Last week, two men were arrested in connection with Dionisio’s murder.

The suspects are Ramón Eusebio Solís Zelaya is an employee of a private security company and César Daniel Amador Estrada, an active-duty agent of the investigative police.

Kurt ver Beek is the Co-founder of the Association for a More Just Society. We first talked with Kurt in July of 2006.

He described how the organization he helped found went from relief work to development work to social justice issues like land reform, crime, and Labor rights…
