Morning Shift continues our series on breaking through the taboo of talking about dying with a focus on individuals who approach death on a daily basis at work. It’s as normal a part of their day as checking emails or meetings for the rest of us. And they do that, too. Maggie McMeekin is a hospice nurse at JourneyCare. McMeekin decided to do hospice care after nursing training introduced her to patients who weren’t always deciding for themselves how—and when—they died. That didn’t sit well with her. She believes patients deserve to die with integrity, when they’re ready. This is the mission of her and her fellow nurses’ day-to-day work. We follow McMeekin through a particularly busy day at an inpatient clinic in a northwest Chicago suburb.
