Humanitarian Costs Of Trump’s Military Budget Increase
President Trump addresses Congress Tuesday. He’s expected to ask Congress to increase spending on the military and defense by $54 billion.
One of the ways the president wants to pay for the increase is through cuts in other areas. It’s been reported that one place he wants to start is foreign aid. Foreign aid makes up about one percent of the federal budget. The US government supports several development programs and humanitarian initiatives around the world, operating in more than 100 countries and funding programs for sustainable agriculture to shelter for refugees.
We discuss what these cuts could mean and how the government might decide what to cut with Bill O’Keefe. He’s the vice president of government relations and advocacy at Catholic Relief Services, an international humanitarian aid agency that was started during World War II.
