Today is the first day of school for students in northwest suburban Huntley. But teachers are working without a contract.

Huntley teachers are reporting to work for the first day of school, despite not reaching a contract agreement with the Board of Ed. A Sunday meeting between the Huntley Education Association and the Huntley Consolidated School District 158 ended without a deal. And the contract expired at the end of June.

Fifth grade teacher Julie Hunter says teachers voted to authorize a strike last week, but choose not act on it yet.

HUNTER: I’m very excited to have the kids back in my classroom. I am here to educate them, and my contract is down at the bottom of the list of my priorities right now.

Hunter says as long as the board is willing to negotiate teachers plan to continue working. She couldn’t say when the union would meet with the board next. The district serves about 8,200 students.
