Early voting

Early voting by choice continues to grow in popularity. In the 2022 Illinois primary, tens of thousands of voters cast their vote before election day. If you want to be like them, you can early vote at these following locations in the collar counties:

  • City of Chicago voters can cast their early ballots at either 191 N. Clark St. or the 6th floor of 69 W. Washington St. Each of the city’s 50 wards has its own early voting location, as well.

  • Suburban Cook County residents can vote early in-person in the pedway of 69 W. Washington St. in Chicago or in specific suburban locations.

  • DuPage County residents can vote early at Building 5 of the DuPage County Fairgrounds or at 21 other voting sites.

  • Kane County voters can vote early at the Kane County Clerk’s office at 719 S. Batavia Ave. in Geneva or at the Clerk’s satellite office in Aurora at 5 E. Downer Pl., in addition to other voting locations.

  • Kendall County residents can vote early at the Kendall County Clerk’s office at 111 W. Fox St. in Yorkville or additional voting locations.

  • Lake County voters can cast their ballots in the main courthouse lobby at 18 N. County St. in Waukegan, with other early voting sites also open.

  • McHenry County residents can vote early at the McHenry County Administration Building at 667 Ware Rd. in Woodstock, or other voting locations.

  • Will County voters can vote early at the Will County Clerk’s Office at 302 N. Chicago St. in Joliet, or other voting sites.

Vote by mail

It’s now too late to apply to get a mail-in ballot. If you have a mail-in ballot, you must have it postmarked by Nov. 8 for it to count. If you’ve filled it out but changed your mind about mailing it in, you can surrender your ballot and vote in-person on election day instead.

Election Day

Polls will be open on Nov. 8 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and do not require you to show an ID if you’re already registered to vote, though you might be required to show an ID if an election judge challenges your right to vote or if you’re registering to vote that day.

If you’ve moved within 30 days before Election Day, you can update your vote registration information on site, but you must bring two forms of ID (see examples of what kinds of ID qualify), one with your updated address.

If you run into problems with being able to vote in-person — such as forgetting your ID when you were supposed to bring it — you can still submit a provisional ballot. However, you’d still have to eventually show your ID for your vote to count. In Chicago, a voter must show their ID to the election board within seven days of the election. In suburban Cook County, they must do it before the Thursday after the election.
