This week the Illinois House and Senate passed similar bills that would require a minimum teacher salary of 40-thousand dollars. Supporters say this will help address a teacher shortage. Former Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed a similar bill. According to data from the Illinois State Board of Education, more than 50 percent of the state’s school districts pay a minimum salary of less than $40-thousand. Some districts say they don’t have the funds to increase wages. The senate bill includes a provision for a review panel to help underfunded districts make up the difference, WBEZ’s Susie An reports.
