A Kane County court yesterday found a trustee of northwest suburban Carpentersville guilty of four counts of battering his wife. Now immigrant rights supporters are citing the conviction in an attempt to seize control of the village board.

Carpentersville has been a hot spot in the nation’s immigration debate since 2006. That’s when village Trustee Paul Humpfer helped introduce a proposed ordinance that would have banned doing business with, or renting to, undocumented immigrants.

Now his opponents are pointing to an Illinois statute that declares an elective office vacant after its occupant is convicted of an infamous crime.

SARTO: He is no longer a trustee.

That’s Carpentersville President Bill Sarto. Humpfer’s attorney declined to comment on the situation.
