Immigrant Groups Push For Stronger Sanctuary Policies

Immigrant advocacy groups are calling on city officials to amend Chicago’s sanctuary policies by eliminating “carve outs” for local authorities to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement in certain cases. The carve outs allow cooperation in cases where an immigrant has an outstanding criminal warrant, has been convicted or charged with a felony or is listed in the city’s gang database. The mayor’s office says it will not commit to eliminating those carve outs at this time.
