International conference in London to focus on famine and security in Somalia

This week, a U.N. supported report stated that 258,000 people died from famine in Somalia between 2010-2012. Half of those dead were under the age of five. The number nearly doubles a 2011 estimate. U.N. official Philippe Lazzarini said in a statement that many of those deaths are attributable to slow international response. On Tuesday, global leaders gather in London to discuss partnering to help Somalia rebuild. Two decades of civil war and famine have left Somalia, by most analyses, a failed state. Somalia Conference 2013 is one of several global events this year focusing on Somalia. Professor Ahmed Samatar from the Institute for Global Citizenship at Macalester College tells us if he believes this global attention will make any difference in the everyday lives of Somalis.
