Celebrated architect Jeanne Gang has been picked to design a $148 million student residence complex on the northern edge of the University of Chicago campus. The three-building North Campus Residence Hall and Dining Commons is planned to accommodate 800 students will be located at 55th and University. Renderings released by the university and Gang’s firm, Studio Gang, indicate a sculpted, visually expressive architecture that very subtly recalls the neo-Gothic design of the campus’s core. The buildings would also serve as northern gateway to the university. Gang, a Chicago architect is also a MacArthur fellow. Aqua Tower near Randolph and Columbus is among her more famous works. With the complex, the university continues its streak of attracting noteworthy contemporary architecture by top-flight architects in recent years. The Logan Center for the Arts, designed by Tod Williams/Billie Tsien Architects opened last October; the Helmut Jahn-designed Mansueto Library—a glass egg rising from 57th and Ellis—opened in 2011. Gang joins us to talk about the project, and Chicago architecture in general. (Photo:Flickr/Lmgadelha)
