A new Illinois law that goes into effect on Monday is drawing criticism from a prominent group of lawyers.

The law will force some sexual predators to wear electronic tracking devices so parole officers can track them everywhere.

Peter Wise is the president of the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

He says the law is a political move by public officials to make them look like they’re tough on crime.

“This get tough on every sex offender mentality is kind of the darling legislation du jour,” Wise says.

Wise says the system for deciding which sex offenders should be tracked needs to be improved.

Meanwhile a spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Corrections says the electronic monitoring devices serve as a deterrent for the parolees.
