A suburban man may spend 10 years in prison if he’s convicted of unlawfully acquiring and possessing a deadly puffer fish toxin.

The neurotoxin found in a puffer fish is called tetrodotoxin. It’s 1,200 times deadlier than cyanide. Edward Bachner is charged in federal court with five counts of acquiring the poison to use as a weapon and five counts of possessing unlawful amounts of it. Bachner plead not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday. But FBI agents say Bachner allegedly bought the toxin posing as a research doctor. They say they found needles, empty vials of toxin and a book about poisoning people in his home.
