The Illinois House voted against a measure on Thursday that aimed to the state to the list of those legalizing medical marijuana.  

The proposed measure would’ve implmented a three-year pilot program for medical marijuana.  The program would’ve allowed people suffering from certain kinds of illnesses, including cancer and AIDS, to receive a prescription for marijuana to help alleviate pain and nausea. 

But the measure went down to defeat on 61 to 53 vote.

The bill would have barred people from buying the marijuana anywhere except 59 licensed, not-for-profit sellers.  But critics warned that a medical marijuana program could provide cover for illegal marijuana sales.

House Republican Leader Tom Cross endorsed this bill after opposing earlier versions.  He said it’s only right to help relieve people’s suffering.
