MEXICO ELECTIONS

Presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, of the MORENA party, waves to supporters as he arrives for his closing campaign rally at Azteca stadium in Mexico City, Wednesday, June 27, 2018. Mexico’s four presidential candidates are closing their campaigns before the country’s July 1 elections.

Opinion polls in Mexico suggest a landslide victory for Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the left-wing former mayor of Mexico City, to become the country's next president on Sunday. Mexicans will consider numerous issues at the polls, such as epidemic levels of violence, widespread political corruption, a sluggish economy, and a contentious relationship with the United States on issues such as immigration and trade. We’ll get analysis from Laura Carlsen, director of the Americas Program at the Center for International Policy. Based in Mexico City, she hosts the online television program, “Interview from Mexico”. Joining her to discuss how Chicago’s Mexican community is following the election is Susan Gzesh, executive director of the University of Chicago’s Pozen Family Center for Human Rights.
