The death of Hadiya Pendleton in 2013 sparked a national conversation about the persistent gun violence in Chicago. The 15-year-old drum majorette was wounded during a drive-by shooting at Harsh Park — less than a mile from former President Barack Obama’s Kenwood neighborhood home.

Hadiya was killed about a week after she performed at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration festivities, and the national media descended on Chicago to cover her shooting death.

Nearly five years later, Micheail Ward and Kenneth Williams are standing trial for the teen’s murder. WBEZ’s Natalie Moore and Miles Bryan join the Morning Shift for an update on the case and to break down media coverage of Hadiya’s death.
