Activists in a heavily Mexican neighborhood of Chicago on Tuesday announced a new tactic to thwart immigration raids. We report from our West Side bureau.

Since a sweeping immigration bill stalled in Congress last summer, workshops across the country have taught undocumented residents how to respond to authorities. The standard advice includes refusing to open the door unless there’s a warrant.

Now an Anglican mission in the Little Village neighborhood is going further. Our Lady of Guadalupe is forming a network to help neighbors alert one another about any raid.

SANTOS: On each block that chooses to participate, there will be a sign in front of the individual who will be the captain.

That’s organizer Julie Santos.

But Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Gail Montenegro points to a federal law against harboring the undocumented.

MONTENEGRO: That can include providing illegal aliens with transportation, shelter and assistance to avoid deportation.

The mission is planning a neighborhood drill for next month.
