It’s 18 feet wide and weighs as much as a 747 jet. But this monstrous machine could be a glimpse into the future of cancer treatment. The cyclotron delivers an alternative to traditional radiation therapy called proton therapy. This treatment uses a beam of protons to kill the DNA of cancerous cells. The cyclotron arrives later today to Central DuPage Hospital Proton Therapy Center, a ProCure Center, located adjacent to a new cancer center that the hospital is building in Warrenville, Ill. The cyclotron will be one of just a handful in the country. Dr. William Hartsell, the medical director of the proton therapy center in DuPage, tells us more.
