Jane Addams Hull House celebrated the opening of its new headquarters today with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Addams developed this world-famous settlement house on Chicago’s West Side in 1889 as an oasis for struggling immigrants and others.

Mayor Richard Daley thanked Hull House for putting Chicago on the map as a place that cares about the less fortunate.

“Jane Addams’ Hull House committment one hundred years ago and the same committment you have today…That is saying to each and every one of us that we can reach down to help somebody less fortunate in our community,” said Daley.

The Hull House Association—now approaching its 117th anniversary—has expanded into sixty programs,with three dozen community centers.

The group pioneered the country’s first juvenile court, and it has tackled causes ranging from public health to women’s rights.
