NPR photojournalist David Gilkey was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday along with NPR’s Afghan interpreter Zabihullah Tamanna.

The men were traveling with an Afghan military convoy when they came under fire from the Taliban and were killed. An Afghan soldier also died.

Gilkey was a widely respected photojournalist, honored with numerous awards for the often dangerous work he did, and the images he captured from periods of conflict, crisis, and change across the world.

The events he documented included the earthquake in Haiti, the end of apartheid in South Africa, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In February, David Gilkey traveled with NPR’s All Things Considered co-host Kelly McEvers to report on Doctors Without Borders in South Sudan. McEvers joined Take Two to remember him.
