I don’t why I’m so tickled by the revelation that R. Kelly is a Billy Ocean fan and used to work with the Trinidadian singer. My boy Dave and I were on the phone the other night looking up old Ocean videos. I guess I figured Kelly would relate more to Marvin Gaye. I love, love Marvin Gaye and I’m not comparing the two strictly on aesthetics. But Gaye and Kelly both got the divided soul thing going on - church and sex and stripping at concerts. Both have the stream of consciousness in their songs, too. We heard a lot about music today in court. The alleged victim was in a singing quartet with her cousins when they were kids, and prosecutors showed videos from the group 10 years ago. I think I saw Kelly slightly nod his head to the beat. Witness Bennie Edwards Jr. seemed smitten with Kelly’s tie and watching the videos. He had a goofy grin during most of his testimony. He wore a T-shirt that said Rebel Dread. Maybe he’s jet lagged. Edwards plays for Lionel Richie and just got back from Germany last night. I should’ve worn my campy Lionel Richie Fan Club T-shirt today. Well, maybe not. That’s probably against the decorum order. Btw … It’s Judge Vincent Gaughan’s birthday. There was a little celebration today with pizza and cake. Reporters weren’t invited. What were the odds? We were discouraged from singing happy birthday to his honor.
