According to the Iraqi government, so-called Islamic State fighters have looted, bulldozed, and otherwise destroyed the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud, a place filled with archaeological and cultural treasures. The acts are being called “cultural cleansing” by UNESCO, the United Nations’ cultural agency. Last week, the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute put out their own statement of condemnation. We’ll find out the history behind the artifacts being destroyed, and what they have in common the U of C’s collection from Dr. Jack Green, Chief Curator at the Oriental Institute.
