Pilot Light program arms kids with tools for better eating

Chefs Matthias Merges and Jason Hammel are usually whipping up new, innovative meals for refined palates at their restaurants Yusho and Lula Cafe, but they want to extend those talents to a new generation. As part of their program Pilot Light, Mattias, Hammel and other well-known chefs in the city teach Chicago Public School students the facts about the food they’re eating and how to make better nutritional choices. And, they remind kids-and their parents-that good eating doesn’t have to be boring. Merges and Hammel join us to explain how the program has evolved since 2010 and what they hear from young people about healthy eating.
