Family dynamics are nothing new for the stage. Pulitzer-Prize winning works like August: Osage County go deep into the resentment, anger and dysfunction that work their way into these relationships. It’s terrain that’s familiar for playwright Stephen Karam. His play Sons of the Prophet, exploring the impact of tragedy and misfortune on one family, was nominated for a Pulitzer in 2012. Now Karem’s back with a darker turn on this theme; somewhat literally as his work The Humans takes place at night. It kicks of its world premiere next week at Chicago’s American Theater Company. We talk with Stephen Karam and American Theater Company’s PJ Paparelli about the inspiration behind the work, and what theatergoers can expect.
