The plan for a controversial bike path along Lake Michigan is turning political. Some voters in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood will vote on the issue in Tuesday’s primary.

The bike path is actually just part of the plan. The path would run the length of four city blocks on landfill that would extend into Lake Michigan. The thing is some property owners in the area object to the whole idea.

Tim Bartkiewicz has a condo nearby and he’s leading the charge against the bike path. He says it would destroy the beach front and that’s why he helped put a non-binding referendum on Tuesday’s ballot.

BARTKIEWICZ: You know, we’re trying to send a message to the city that the folks of the neighborhood don’t want this. This is not something that we really need.

Meantime, the group supporting the bike path says it’s just part of the larger goal to make more of Chicago’s lakefront available to the public. A spokesperson for the non-profit Friends of the Parks says access to the lakefront concerns the whole city. She says the bike path referendum gives just a few precincts in South Shore a chance to weigh in.
