A refurbished mural at a former community center in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood is nearing completion after it was destroyed earlier this year. Local real estate development company City Pads painted over the mural in June — sparking outrage over what many community members saw as a symbol of gentrification. After the outcry, the company hired the original artist, Ray Patlan, to repaint the mural. Now, a community group says City Pads has offered to fund a children’s art program in the neighborhood. A spokesperson for Patlan says the mural will finished by Wednesday.
