A new report says Chicago’s garbage truck crews are being paid for work they aren’t doing. The city’s Inspector General says some Bureau of Sanitation workers are slacking on the job for about a quarter of the day.

Inspector General David Hoffman blames quote “extremely poor supervision by Bureau of Sanitation supervisors.” The investigation was conducted in 10 of the city’s wards. It found that garbage truck crews didn’t do any work for an average of two hours a day. Employees took long lunches and sat in their cars for extended periods of time while on the clock. Hoffman’s report says, citywide, that means $14 million in wasted wages each year. The Streets and Sanitation Commissioner calls the misconduct the work of a few bad apples.
