Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel has said that he wants to make the Windy City “the bike-friendliest city in the country.” By some measures, we’re getting closer to that goal.

We’ve added bike lanes, and more are on the horizon—Emanuel wants to add 100 miles of lanes before the end of his first term. In May, Bicycling Magazine rated Chicago the fifth most bike-friendly in the nation.

But do these benchmarks reflect the reality of the road? Anyone who has hit the streets in a bike or a car knows that sharing the streets is easier said than done. Amidst often-packed roads, commuting can feel like a struggle for cyclists and motorists alike.
