Today is day two of a summit on the purpose and the promise provided by tiny homes. The small structures are being discussed at a forum by the American Institute of Architects Chicago and other community organizations. A prototype tiny house is currently on the campus at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It was the winning design of an international tiny homes competition.
Three Chicago architects won for their work on creating a small and affordable space geared to the needs of those who are homeless or need affordable housing. Proponents in Chicago say groups of tiny homes can fit on a standard city lot, but to put more than one property in that space would require zoning changes.
The purpose of the summit at UIC is to get community and government leaders to buy into the tiny homes phenomenon to help with housing issues in Chicago.
