This lecture by Nicholas Cullinan, assistant curator of the Tate Modern, focused on the late style of Cy Twombly as manifested by the works on display in the Art Institute exhibition and major cycles such as Coronation of Sesostris (2000), Lepanto (2001), the Baccus series from 2005, and a recently completed group of works, Twombly’s largest to date, photographed in various stages of completion in situ in the artist’s studio.

Applying theories of artistic “ultima maniera” such as Edward Said’s last work On Late Style, published posthumously in 2006, and drawing upon unseen photographs of the artist’s studio, this lecture examined the late flourishing of Twombly’s work since 2000 across his paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and photography.
