Study Shows How Debt Can Trap Low-Income Black And Latina Women In Poverty

A statewide report called “Stopping the Debt Spiral” surveyed black and Latina mothers in Illinois about policies around debt. It finds that debt and unpaid bills with fines keep many low-income people trapped in poverty. The report was produced by the nonprofit Community Organizing and Family Issues with Loyola University’s Center for Urban Research. Low-income families are calling for better debt repayment plans in the city of Chicago.
