When the International Criminal Court issued its indictment, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir promptly expelled 13 of the largest aid groups from Darfur. The United Nations has since launched an investigation to determine if Bashir’s move counts as a war crime. 

The International Rescue Committee, which has provided basic services to Darfur refugees for years, was among the recently-exiled aid groups.

The IRC’s director in East Africa, Kurt Tjossem, said al-Bashir’s decision will have profound effects on the lives of thousands of refugees.
