The Chicago Police Department has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on stingrays. Not the animals, but the tech gadgets. “StingRay” is the brand name for so-called cell-site simulators, which can be used to secretly intercept cell signals. The CPD is using them to track suspect’s phone calls. The police department says StingRays are used only for serious criminal investigations, but some citizens aren’t so sure. The city is spending a pretty penny on lawsuits to keep information about these Stingrays under wraps. Frank Main is a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times and has been following this story.
