Illinois is trying to recover grant money for a private school in Chicago that mistakenly received a million dollar state grant.

The original grant was meant for the fire-ravaged Pilgrim Baptist Church, but it mistakenly went to the Loop Lab School. Pilgrim Baptist eventually got its money. And the state wanted the school to keep its cash, too, says Ashley Cross, spokesperson for the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. But Cross says there were some problems with the school’s grant application.

CROSS: DCEO has been attempting to resolve this matter informally for several months without success. So now we’re at a point that if the outstanding compliance issues are not resolved by Friday, DCEO will then proceed to the formal grant recovery process.

Cross wouldn’t give details on the review process. Calls to the Loop Lab School were not returned.
