How well did you find your way around the Chicago of the past?
In 1939 this stretch of Clark Street was crowded with traffic servicing Dearborn Street Station, just out of the picture on the right. Today the station building remains, but the trains are long gone. In 1939 the street arrangement was different, too: Taylor Street crossed the river to intersect with Clark, while 9th Street did not extend this far west.
The Board of Trade is clearly visible in the 1939 photo. The steeple belongs to Old St. Peter’s Catholic Church, which survived the Great Fire, only to be demolished in the 1950s.
