Former Illinois treasurer Judy Baar Topinka has kicked off her campaign for state comptroller. The Republican last ran for office in 2006 when she lost the governor’s race to Rod Blagojevich.

Loyola political science professor Alan Gitelson says this could be Topinka’s last chance.

GITELSON: Judy Baar Topinka really needs this to be successful. She needs to continue and open up any other opportunities that she might have. So, I think if she’s not successful in getting the nomination for comptroller, many people will argue that her political career, statewide, at least, is over.

Gitelson says the corruption case against Blagojevich could help Topinka’s campaign. She hopes to replace outgoing Democratic comptroller Dan Hynes, who is leaving the office to run for governor.
