In July 2016, Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, put-down a coup attempt. In retaliation, he would purge sectors of Turkish society by the tens of thousands. Erdogan has fired, jailed or detained civil servants, including military personnel, journalists, police, judges, teachers, political opponents and even employees of state-controlled Turkish Airlines. The Turkish government blames former ally and cleric Fetullah Gülen for the coup and continues to demand his extradition from the U.S. The crackdowns are ongoing and the detention of human rights defenders is now making global headlines, including the recent arrest of Idil Eser, Amnesty International’s Turkey director. We’ll talk about Eser’s case and civil liberties in Turkey since the coup attempt with Gauri van Gulik, deputy Europe director at Amnesty International.
