Tuesday night two University of Chicago students will unveil a bronze bust of Dr. Georgiana Simpson — the first African American woman to receive a Ph.D. — in Reynolds Club, a building that now functions as a student union but was once home to the university’s men-only club.
As you may have noticed, most statues and busts around the country and the city depict men. The Simpson bust is one of the first in Chicago to honor a historically significant woman.
Morning Shift talks to Asya Akca and Shae Omonijo, the two U of C political science students behind the bust, which is both their own organic project and part of the nationwide push for more statues of women known as the Monumental Women project.
